Nous sommes un peu tard dans la saison pour penser aux bonnets, mais je tiens à partager une expérience que j'ai faite récemment.
It is a little late in the season to think about making hats, but I can't help sharing an experiment I made last month.
Il s'agit du bonnet Cyclone, une idée originale de Diana. Le patron est plus une recette qu'un patron proprement dit et propose la réalisation du bonnet au tricot. Les explications sont en anglais. Je ne propose pas ici une traduction fidèle en français, mais plutôt une reprise des explications de base adaptées au crochet tunisien. Un tout grand merci au designer Diana qui m'a autorisé cette démarche.
This experiment is the cyclone hat, an original idea by Diana. The pattern is more a recipe than a pattern as such and the blog post of Diana on this hat is all about knitting. Post is written in English. I will not translate Diana's blog post in French. My attempt is more to take back the main steps and show that it is adaptable to Tunisian crochet. A big thank to the designer Diana who so kindly allowed me to do so.
Ce modèle a retenu mon attention pour de nombreuses raisons. Il est original : l'effet "couronne spiralée" est très joli. Il est simple : aucune augmentation, aucune diminution, quasiment aucune couture, donc abordable pour les débutants. Il est adaptable à de nombreux points, déclinable à l'infini avec des fils unicolores ou multicolores. Bref, une fois que vous avez compris le principe de base, laissez libre cours à votre imagination et réalisez des modèles uniques en un tour de main (ou presque).
So this hat caught my attention for many different reasons. It is out of the ordinary : I find the "spiral crown" effect just a beauty. It is simple to make : no increase, no decrease, just a bit of seaming at the end, so nothing technical that beginners could not handle. You can use any stitch you like, opt for one color only or 2 or 3. Even variegated yarn would do. In short, once you understand the basic construction principle, you are free to make unique finished objects in no time (or so...).
Quel est ce principe de base? Pour reprendre l'exemple de Diana sur son blog, il nous est tous arrivé d'enfiler un pull dont une manche était entortillée sur elle-même, rendant le passage de la main impossible. C'est exactement cette torsion qui est appliquée volontairement au bonnet pour obtenir l'effet couronne. En bref, faites un tube, pliez-le en deux (envers sur envers), faites pivoter les bords d'un peu plus de 180°, cousez-les et... hop! Vous avez votre bonnet.
What is this basic principle? To take back the example provided by Diana in her blog post, it happened to us all that we wanted to put on a sweater but the twisted sleeve would not allow our hand to go through it. This is exactly this twist that is applied to the hat to get this crown effect. In short, crochet a tube in the round, fold it in 2 (wrong side on wrong side), twist borders by a little more than 180°, seam borders and... tadaaaa! You have a hat.
Le crochet tunisien porte de nombreux noms, dont celui de "crochet tricot". Cette forme hybride de crochet est cousine du tricot. Il est donc possible de réaliser bien des patrons de tricot au crochet tunisien. C'est ce que j'ai fait avec la recette de Diana.
Tunisian crochet has many names, one of which is "crochet tricot" (tricot in French means knitting). This hybrid type of crochet has common technical aspects with knitting. It is therefore possible to adapt a lot of patterns meant for knitters to Tunisian crochet techniques. This is what I have done with Diana's recipe.
Fil et crochet
Je recommande vivement du fil fin. Le crochet tunisien est plus dense que le tricot. Optez pour un fil "fingering weight", fin, voire super fin. Pour indication, j'ai utilisé de la Malabrigo Mechita. Pour d'autres projets à l'avenir, j'utiliserai un fil plus fin. (Notez, je suis tellement enthousiaste à propos de ce patron que je prévois d'en faire d'autres déclinaisons.) Votre objectif est d'obtenir une étoffe légère et fine. Rappelez-vous : le bonnet a une double épaisseur.
Sélectionnez un crochet double (à deux becs) dont le diamètre est de 2 à 3 tailles au-dessus de celui préconisé pour le fil.
L'ouvrage se réalise au crochet tunisien en rond. Comptez donc au moins deux pelotes de fil : une pour monter les mailles sur le crochet, l'autre pour rabattre les mailles avec l'autre extrémité du crochet. Ces deux pelotes peuvent être de même couleur ou de couleurs différentes. Peu importe. Par contre, elles doivent être de calibre identique.
Yarn and hook
I strongly recommend fingering weight yarn (or thinner even). As an indication, I used Malabrigo Mechita. But for future projects, I plan to use thinner yarn. (Note that I'm so enthusiast about this pattern that I plan to make more projects out of it.) Tunisien crochet is thicker than knitting. Your target is to get a nice and light drape. Keep in mind : this hat has a double layer.
Select a double ended hook, the size of which is 2 to 3 times bigger than what is usually recommended for the yarn type you selected.
The hat is worked in Tunisian crochet in the round. You'll need at least 2 skeins : one to pick up loops with one end of your hook, another one to work loops off your hook with the other end. These 2 skeins can be in the same color or in different colors. You choose. But they must be within the same range of thickness.
Echantillon
Je suis une adepte des échantillons. Donc, fidèle à moi-même, je vous encourage à faire un échantillon. Il vous permettra d'estimer avec justesse le drapé et la douceur de l'étoffe que vous crochetez. Il vous donnera aussi une indication sur le nombre de mailles que vous devez monter.
Comment? Comptez le nombre de mailles que vous avez montées sur 10 cm. Ensuite multipliez le nombre de mailles par 5,4 ou 5,6. L'objectif : atteindre une circonférence de 54 ou 56 cm. Il est probable que votre tête mesure plus de 54 cm de circonférence. Mais c'est toujours bien d'avoir un bonnet qui tient plutôt fermement sur la tête. Le crochet tunisien n'est pas réputé pour sa souplesse. Certains points seront plus souples que d'autres. Donc, faites un échantillon. Estimez la souplesse de l'étoffe et choisissez le nombre de mailles à monter en fonction.
Swatch
I like swatches. So I remain faithful to myself and encourage you to make a swatch before you start your hat. This swatch will allow you to feel the drape and softness of the piece you are about to crochet. It will give you an indication on the number of stitches you need to cast on.
How many stitches? Count how many stitches you have crocheted over 10 cm. Then multiply this number of stitches by 5,5 or 5,6. Target : get a circumference of 54 or 56 cm. Probably that your head measures more than 54 cm. But it is always good to have a hat that fits a bit tightly on your head. You don't want to have a very loose hat. This being said, Tunisian crochet is not particularly stretchy. Some stitches will allow more stretch than others, but still... So, make a swatch. Assess the drape and count the number of stitches you'll need to cast on accordingly.
La recette
Le bonnet cyclone est une sorte de bonnet double, un long tube plié en deux, envers sur envers. Il est réversible. Vous crochetez donc une pièce constituée de 3 parties : le bonnet 1, la bordure et le bonnet 2. Donnez libre cours à votre inspiration. Sélectionnez un point différent pour chaque partie. Ou pas. Selon votre goût et votre humeur.
The recipe
The cyclone hat is a double layered hat, a long tube fold in 2 on the wrong side. It is reversible. You therefore crochet a piece made of 3 main parts : hat 1, brim and hat 2. Open up your imagination and select a different stitch for each part. Or don't.
Commencez par monter le nombre de mailles nécessaire pour faire le tour de votre tête. Ensuite crochetez en rond avec le point de votre choix jusqu'à ce que votre tube atteigne une hauteur de 19,5 cm. Fin du bonnet 1.
Start by casting on the number of stitches you need to get around your head. Then crochet in the round with the stitch you like until this tube reaches 19,5 cm long. End of hat 1.
Passez à la bordure. A nouveau, optez pour un point souple qui vous plait. Un point de fausses côtes par exemple. Personnellement, pour la bordure, j'ai opté pour un point bicolore (rose et grid). Mais ce choix n'engage que moi. Montez la bordure jusqu'à atteindre une hauteur de 11 cm.
Move on to brim. Again, opt for a stretchy stitch that you like. A fake ribbed stitch, for example. For the brim, personally, I opted for a stitch using 2 different colors. But this is my own choice. Work a brim until you reach 11 cm long.

Ensuite passez au bonnet 2. Même principe : choisissez un point, changez de couleur... à vous de voir. Montez ce bonnet 2 sur une hauteur de 19,5 cm.
Then crochet hat 2. Same principle : pick up a stitch you like, change color... you choose. Crochet hat 2 until you reach 19,5 cm long.
La longueur totale du bonnet cyclone a ce stade est donc de : 19,5 + 11 + 19,5 = 50 cm
Cette longueur est ce que vous souhaitez obtenir pour votre tube complet. Si vous souhaitez jouer sur la longueur du bonnet 1, de la bordure ou du bonnet 2, variez les proportions, mais au final l'ensemble doit mesurer 50 cm de hauteur.
The total length of the cyclone hat at this stage is : 19,5 + 11 + 19,5 = 50 cm
This length is what you want to get for the length of the full tube. If you want to change the length of hat 1, the brim or hat 2, go ahead and modify the given proportions to get a different result, but in the end the whole thing should measure 50 cm long.
Pour finir, rabattez les mailles. Diana préconise une méthode propre au tricot. Je n'ai pas encore expérimenté une alternative au crochet tunisien. Ce que j'ai fait : j'ai rabattu les mailles, plié l'ouvrage en deux, envers sur envers, tourné les 2 bords à un peu plus de 180° (pour donner cet effet tordu) et cousu les bords ensemble. Et voilà!
Finish by binding off as in normal Tunisian crochet. Diana recommends a technique that is specific to knitting. I have not tried a similar technique with Tunisian crochet. What I did : I worked all loops off my hook, I folded the tube in 2 on the wrong side, I twisted the borders by a little more than 180° (to get this crown effect) and I sewed the borders together. Et voilà!
