Il y a quelques semaines, l'envie m'est venue de faire un pull sans couture au crochet tunisien. Cela faisait bien longtemps que je n'en avais plus fait. De plus, les températures restaient fraîches pour la saison. Mon stock de Tosca light de Lang yarns, qui trainait dans une caisse depuis deux ou trois ans, semblait suffisant pour un pull. Bref, de nombreuses conditions, conscientes et inconscientes, m'ont amenée à rechercher des patrons.
Several weeks ago I felt like making a top down sweater using Tunisian crochet in the round. I had not done any top down for some time. The weather outside was still a bit chilly. I had enough Tosca light from Lang yarns in my stash. In short, I had several reasons, conscious and unconscious, to look for a pattern that would fit what I had in mind.
Il faut bien l'admettre: les patrons de pulls ou sweaters au crochet tunisien ne sont pas légions. Quant aux modèles sans couture, ils sont très peu nombreux.
Toutefois, il existe de jolis choses, comme le Citizen Pullover ou le Somersault cardigan de Kabila Sri Ponnusamy. J'aime beaucoup les ouvrages de Sys Fredens également, mais je ne peux que les admirer en photos, ne connaissant pas du tout le danois.
One thing that cannot be argued: patterns for sweaters in Tunisian crochet are not legions. And when it comes to find seamless patterns in Tunisian crochet in the round, the number drops even more.
This being said, there are some very pretty things, like Citizen Pullover or Somersault cardigan by Kabila Sri Ponnusamy. I also like patterns by Sys Fredens very much. Unfortunately they are in Danish, which is a language I cannot easily read.
Loin d'être découragée, j'ai consulté les ouvrages de ma bibliothèque. Même si je ne possède pas de livres sur les top downs au crochet tunisien (est-ce que cela existe?), j'en ai quelques-uns sur le crochet traditionnel et le tricot. En m'interrogeant sur les dimensions standards d'un top, j'ai repris le "Knitter's handy book of top-down sweaters" de Ann Budd. A ma connaissance, ce livre n'est pas disponible en français. Et c'est bien dommage car il contient une mine d'informations sur la construction de pulls sans couture. A noter: il s'agit d'un livre sur le tricot. Pas le crochet. J'insiste...
Far from being put off, I looked for inspiration in my books. OK, I don't have books on top-down sweaters in Tunisian crochet. (Does it exist at all, by the way?) But I have a few books on top-down sweaters in "traditional" crochet or for knitting. Because I was thinking about standard dimensions, I took back the Knitter's handy book of top-down sweaters by Ann Budd. To my knowledge, this book does not exist in French. Which is a pity because it has plenty of useful information on seamless sweaters construction. Warning: this is a book about knitting. Not about crochet. I insist...
Puis m'est venue l'idée saugrenue de suivre les explications au tricot d'un modèle de base dans ce livre mais en les adaptant au crochet tunisien. Et cela donne ça:
Then the weird idea came to my mind that I should try and adapt knitting instructions to Tunisian crochet techniques. Here is the result:
J'ai opté pour une taille 40 au lieu de mon traditionnel 38. Pourquoi?
I opted for size 40 instead of my usual size 38. Why?
- Le crochet tunisien est plus épais que le tricot. J'ignorais si cette épaisseur prendrait de l'espace "à l'intérieur" du modèle... Pfff... Quelles idées me passent par la tête, parfois! Je n'avais pas pensé que j'utilisais un fil fin pour un crochet de calibre bien supérieur à ce qui serait recommandé. Mon échantillon n'était pas épais. Il n'y avait pas lieu de comparer avec le possible résultat tricot...
- Le crochet tunisien est moins souple que le tricot. Cela tient à la mécanique de la technique, plus proche du tissage. Je craignais donc de ne pas obtenir un pull confortable, facile à mettre. Résultat: léger, quasi aérien, incroyablement agréable à porter et assez souple pour viser une taille 38 au prochain essai.
- A sample done in Tunisian crochet is thicker than a knitted sample. I had doubts whether this thickness would take some space "inside" the sweater... Pfff... Sometimes I'd better take a break! I had not taken into account that I would use thinner yarn with a hook size much bigger than usually recommended. My sample in TC was not thick. So my sweater would not be thicker...
- Tunisian crochet is less stretchy than knitting. This is due to the mechanics of this technique, close to weaving. I was not sure I would get a comfortable sweater, easy to put on or take off. And what do I get in the end? Something light like a feather, incredibly soft and so nice to wear. And stretchy enough to target size 38 next time. Because there will be a next time...
Ceci n'est pas mon premier top down au crochet tunisien. J'ai fait des ouvrages sans patron, en estimant la progression au coup par coup, en prenant les mesures de mes enfants, les miennes et en travaillant de savants calculs.
Mind you: this is not my first top-down in Tunisian crochet. I made a few sweaters without patterns before that. It was each time all about taking real measurements from my kids or myself and working out maths to find out how many stitches to cast on.
L'expérience ici démontre qu'un livre présentant des indications simples (sans trop de techniques propres au tricot) peut être très utile pour réaliser des ouvrages originaux au crochet tunisien.
This experiment shows that a book with simple explanations (without too many knitting techniques) can easily be useful to create unique items in Tunisian crochet.
