Les lisières, ce sont les bords de l'ouvrage. Au crochet tunisien, les mailles en bordures d'ouvrage ont leurs propres caractéristiques.
In Tunisian crochet, edge stitches have their own characteristics.
Dans cet article, je fais un petit zoom sur les bordures latérales, qui correspondent aux première et dernière boucles sur le crochet au rang aller (respectivement droite/gauche pour les droitiers et gauche/droite pour les gauchers). Je reviendrai sur les bords inférieur et supérieur dans un autre article.
In this post I'll share a few words on the edge stitches on the right and left sides of the work, i.e. the first and last loops on the hook in a row. I'll come back on foundation row and end row in another post.
Première boucle sur le crochet / First loop on hook
En général, la boucle qui reste sur le crochet en fin de rang retour est en fait la première maille du rang aller suivant.
Usually, the loop that remains on your hook at the end of the return pass is the first loop of the next forward pass.
Cette maille lisière est toujours un peu plus lâche que les autres mailles.
This loop is always a little bit looser than the other loops you pick up on the hook.
Avant de faire le point suivant du rang aller, tirez sur le fil pour bien resserrer cette maille active autour du crochet. C'est un geste qui est devenu automatique chez moi. Je n'y pense pas. Quand je reprends un ouvrage, mon premier réflexe, c'est de bien resserrer cette première boucle avant de démarrer un nouveau rang.
Before you pick up any other loop to start your forward pass, give a good tug on the working yarn to tighten the loop. It is something I do automatically. I really don't think about it anymore. Whenever I take back my crochet project, my first reflex is to give a tug to tighten that very first loop on my hook.
Il ne faut pas étrangler le crochet, mais faites en sorte que cette boucle soit bien serrée. Plus vous avancerez dans le rang aller, plus cette boucle se détendra au "détriment" des autres points qui la côtoient. C'est mécanique.
This being said, no need to tighten yarn around your hook to the extent that it is impossible to glide your hook through it. Just make sure the loop is fairly tight. The more you progress in the forward pass, the looser this first loop will be (to the "detriment" of the other loops next to it).
Dernière boucle sur le crochet / Last loop on hook
La toute dernière boucle à relever au rang aller est vraiment particulière.
The last loop to pick up at the end of the forward pass is very special.
En règle générale, j'insère le crochet sous les 2 brins latéraux de la toute première maille en l'air faite au rang retour précédent. Cette technique assure une très bonne stabilité de la lisière.
In general I insert my hook under 2 strands of yarn on the side. These 2 strands of yarn are formed by the chain made at the beginning of the previous return pass. This technique ensures a very good stability of the edge.
Si le crochet passe sous un seul brin, la lisière perdra en stabilité. Les tractions, que l'ouvrage subira inévitablement au cours du temps, étireront ce brin au détriment des autres brins voisins.
If you insert your hook under 1 strand of yarn only, the edge will become very loose and uneven. Each time your work will (inevitably) undergo some pulling and tugging over time, the edge will suffer.
Ces 2 brins ne sont pas toujours faciles à repérer, surtout au début. Pour vous aider, utilisez un anneau marqueur que vous placez sous les 2 brins de la maille en l'air que vous faites au tout début de chaque rang retour. Ce marqueur vous aidera à identifier l'endroit où insérer le crochet en fin de rang aller suivant.
These 2 strands of yarn are not easy to spot, especially in the beginning. Use a stitch marker that will help you locate these 2 strands of yarn.
La photo ci-contre montre la première maille en l'air faite en début de rang retour. L'anneau est placé dans cette maille en l'air, sous 2 brins, à la base du crochet.
The photo here shows the chain done at the start of the return pass. The marker is placed in the chain, under 2 strands at the base of the hook.
Poursuivez le rang retour normalement (1 jeté, passer le fil à travers 2 boucles) et enchaînez avec un nouveau rang aller. L'anneau sera là pour vous aider à repérer les 2 brins latéraux.
Work the rest of the return pass (yo and pull through 2) and start a new forward pass. At the end of the forward pass, the marker will be there to show you where to insert the hook to pick up the last loop.
Règle d'or / Golden rule
La règle d'or en matière de lisières, c'est la constance. Si vous resserrez votre première boucle une fois tous les 3 ou 4 rangs, si vous piquez tantôt sous 1 brin, tantôt sous 3 brins pour relever la dernière boucle, vos lisières ne seront pas nettes.
The golden rule about edges is consistancy.
If you give a tug to your first loop on hook once every 3 or 4 rows or if you pick up your last loop sometimes under 1 strand, sometimes under 3 strands, your edges will never be neat.
