Il existe de nombreuses catégories de fils (de très fins à très gros), mais aussi une large gamme de types de fibres. D'origine animale, végétale, synthétique... Tous les fils sont différents. Même au sein d'une même catégorie et d'une composition similaire, deux fils ne sont pas dans tous les cas interchangeables.
There are many different categories of yarns (from very fine to very bulky), but also a wide range of fibres. Animal, vegetal, synthetic fibres.... Or a mix of them. All yarns are different. Even within the same category and with a similar content, 2 types of yarn may not be completely interchangeable.
Donc, avant de vous lancer dans un projet, vous choisissez le fil le mieux indiqué pour faire une pièce unique et magnifique. Faites un échantillon avec le fil choisi et posez-vous plusieurs questions: Est-il facile de travailler ce fil? Les mouvements sont-ils fluides, saccadés? Quel est le rythme d'exécution? Le fil est-il doux ou rugueux? Quelle est la sensation que ce fil vous procure dans les mains et sur le crochet? Imaginez travailler avec ce fil pendant des heures...
So, before you dive into your project, you choose the best yarn to make something unique and beautiful. Make a swatch with the yarn you selected. And ask yourself several questions: Is it easy to work with this yarn? The movements you make are fluid or jerky? Do you find a pleasant rythm working with this yarn? Is the yarn soft or rough in your hands? What does it feel like when you work with it? Imagine yourself working with this yarn for hours...

Il existe de nombreux types de crochets. Ils varient par leur calibre (le diamètre de la tige), leur forme (la longueur de la tige, mais aussi la forme de la tête, l'ergonomie du manche), leur composition (métal, bois, acrylique, ivoire...). En fonction du type de fil et du type de projet, vous choisirez peut-être un crochet plus léger ou plus lourd... L'ergonomie est une chose très personnelle.

Au-delà de l'ergonomie, il reste toujours cette même question: quelle taille, quel calibre de crochet choisir? Celui recommandé dans le patron est une bonne indication. Mais nous crochetons tous différemment. Alors, pour vous assurer d'avoir la bonne taille de crochet, faites un échantillon.
Comment les mailles sont-elles disposées: trop serrées, pas assez serrées, juste ce qu'il faut? Comment le crochet passe-t-il dans l'ouvrage?
Beyond simple ergonomy, there is always this question: what hook size to select? If a hook size is recommended in a pattern, that's a start. But bear in mind that we all crochet with a different tension. The only way for you to be sure you select the right hook size for your project is to make a sample. Then check: Are the stitches evenly spread across? Are they too tight? Too loose? Right the way you like it? Also it is easy to insert your hook into the fabric to pick up new stitches?

Un même point ne donnera pas du tout le même résultat selon la taille de crochet, le type de fil et la couleur du fil. Un échantillon vous donnera une indication précise sur l'étoffe que forme le point. Il vous permettra aussi de vous "faire la main" sur un point nouveau. Et ne sous-estimez pas l'importance de la couleur. Un joli motif peut-être complètement effacé s'il est réalisé dans une couleur sombre ou bariolée.
The same stitch will not give the same result if you make it with a different hook size and a different yarn. A swatch will give you a very good indication of what the fabric looks like with the stitch you make. It will also allow you to get some "training" on a new stitch or a combination of stitches you are not used to. And do not underestimate the importance of colours. A beautiful motif may be completely blurred if done with a dark colour or a colour-changing yarn.
4. Pour connaître les mesures réelles du projet / To know the exact measurements of your project
Votre échantillon vous donne des mesures précises sur les dimensions qu'aura votre projet. Combien avez-vous fait de mailles et de rangs pour obtenir un carré de 10 cm de côté? Ou au contraire: combien mesurent 5 répétitions d'un motif donné? Si ces mesures ne correspondent pas à ce qui est indiqué dans le patron, votre projet n'aura pas les mêmes dimensions.
Your swatch gives you indications on the measurements of your future project. How many stitches and how many rows have you done to get a square of 10 cm / 4 inches? Or take it from a different angle: How long do 5 repeats measure? If these measurements do not match with what is indicated in the pattern, your project will never have the same size.
5. Pour gagner du temps / To gain time
Faire un échantillon peut paraître une perte de temps en soi. En fait, le temps passé à faire un échantillon est un investissement, une assurance, avant de se lancer dans un projet.
Ne pas faire d'échantillon, c'est prendre le risque de se rendre compte, à mi-parcours ou même juste à la fin du projet, que ça ne va pas. Sans oublier le temps passé à défaire le projet pour récupérer le fil. Quand vous pouvez défaire l'ouvrage...
